Flight. The universal washbasin.

The universal washbasin, light and luminous

A washbasin for everyone. Contemporary design responds to the right to equality, the gradual ageing of the population and the need to save money, avoiding the construction of bathrooms specifically for people with disabilities. Flight is designed for people with temporary or permanent mobility difficulties, for those without them, and for children.

Made by Goman.

The starting point

The client’s brief was fairly clear and left us plenty of freedom. One thing was certain: we had to work on lightness and universality, and make a mark that would counter the weight of difficulty and illness. Of the classic “disabled washbasin”, only the memory, the ghost, was to remain.

People with disabilities, not “the disabled” or “differently abled”

Luminosity and lightness

Made from a single shaped sheet of translucent Corian®, which expresses lightness and translucency, Flight brings light to a sector – bathrooms for people with disabilities – often marked by an orthopaedic, needlessly technical look. With its soft, flowing lines, Flight rises, as if in flight, above the aesthetic barriers created by regulations that are often misinterpreted.

Law 13/1989 and architectural barriers: results and limits

Of the “disabled washbasin”, only the ghost was to remain.

Elegance

The search for an element that could easily be adopted in public and high-profile settings, such as offices, hotels, restaurants and bars, led to the development of the Flight washbasin. It was a further opportunity to show that regulations and the right to a safe bathroom need not mean technical, unpleasant places. In this sense, it is Goman’s first Design for All project.

Features

Flight is a washbasin with distinctive technical features that make it easy for people with mobility difficulties to use. The thin monocoque shell, which leaves room for the knees, the fixed slope of the top and the concave front edge with elbow rest avoid the need for pneumatic adjustment mechanisms, so that anyone can approach and use it easily.

Corian® DuPont

Corian® is non-toxic and inert (GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality certification), and has good resistance to chemicals and UV light. It is easy to clean and can be repaired if scratched or chipped. Flight is made from thermoformed sheets.

Frequently asked questions

Does a washbasin for wheelchair users have to tilt?

Not necessarily. Flight has a thin monocoque shell that leaves room for the knees, a top with a fixed 11° slope and a concave front edge with an elbow rest. Together, these allow people to approach it and use it while seated, without the pneumatic adjustment mechanisms of tilting washbasins.
