The toilet seat that conceals the front opening

The Open concept grab rail

Presented at exhibitions in Milan, Barcelona and Frankfurt, it was very well received by the public and the trade press. The Open electric fold-down grab rail was designed to define a new way of using the product, free from the constraints of standard production, and responds to needs for safety, ergonomics and, above all, for blending into its surroundings. This first model, which remained a prototype, was also the forerunner of several later models: it showed that innovative, technological Design for All solutions are possible and can be adopted in future production.

Made by Goman.

The Open electric grab rail lowered against a red wall, with the mechanism exposed: the actuator that raises and lowers it inside the white column.

Open Plus

Open is a collection of bathroom safety products; in particular, we worked on the Open Plus seat, made by Goman. It is an open-front seat with a shaped lid that conceals the front opening. It is made of Duroplast, with hinges with or without a soft-close mechanism (patents BS2008U000002 and BS2008O000003). Hiding and covering the front opening was the key idea for making differences in use by people with disabilities less evident. In the bathroom, it is important to eliminate not only elements that single people out, but also cavities and the dark areas they create, which suggest a lack of hygiene. With this project, Goman allowed us to express the philosophy of Design for All.

The phenomenology of exclusion: Design for All

Covering the opening, to make differences in use less evident.
